Press Release

In a bid to provide food security and create jobs, the Imo State government has officially launched what it called the “State Rice Anchor Borrower’s programme”.

Launching the programme Wednesday, September 28, 2016, the State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha said “the aim is to provide food and guarantee food security in our land, to end the song of joblessness in our society and to create for our people the much needed dividends of democracy”.

He remarked that “this is the time to move back to agriculture to cushion the effects of the harsh economy been faced by our nation today. I predicted this economic situation before the inception of this government but nobody heard me. Today I re-emphasize that we must go back to agriculture if we want to get it right. I now call on our youths, women, traditional rulers, civil and public servants to form cooperatives in rice production and avail themselves the benefits of this wonderful programme”.

“What the APC government led by President Mohanmmadu Buhari is doing is to avoid suffocating the future of the nation, otherwise he would have borrowed like those before him to fill the prevailing gaps in our economy. But he has refused to borrow to stop postponing the evil day. He is of the belief that the correction must be made now to secure the nation’s present and future”.

Governor Okorocha thanked the government of Kebbi State for coming to Imo State to share the wonderful experience in rice production and noted that Governor Abubakar Bagadu’s coming with his entourage demonstrates the unity been preached by the APC led government.

In his speech, the governor of Kebbi State Sen. Abubakar Atiku Bagadu said the “Imo governor is thinking outside the box with a view to providing for his people. What we are celebrating is the realization of the vision of the APC Campaign promises of food surplus and security in Nigeria. Imo is now the torch bearer of that promise in agriculture and food production. And with the knowledge and technological base of the state, the sky will be their limit in rice production as they will soon be exporting rice when it comes into full production”.

In her own speech, the CBN Agric Facilitator Mrs. Nkechi Osuji stressed that the CBN will be willing to partner the state in this programme as it will encourage food production, create job opportunities and increase employment in the state. She pointed out that Kebbi State has already accessed over 20 billion naira, promising that Imo will equally access theirs when they put every machinery in place.
