Flooding In Anambra: Limited Storm Control In Eke Awka

The main capital community in Anambra – near the Eke Awka market was recently flooded by storm water following a short rainfall which lasted approximately 20 minutes. The photo essays below show the conditions immediately after the rain event.

247ureports.com gathered that the storm control mechanisms in place at the community have been nonexistent – and not managed by the appropriate government agencies charged with the handling of the clearing of the stormflow channels. The gutters which were originally constructed along with the link roads have filled up with debris and refuse. The managing agencies responsible for the collection of refuse and clearing of the stormflow channels appear to have failed to perform their duties – since the placement of the drainage channels – this goes back to the Peter Obi regime – and has continued till the Obiano regime.

The immediate community surrounding the Eke Awka Market has remained at the mercy each rain event. The commuters have also found themselves at the mercy of each rain event.

An enforceable government policy appears absent to address the current flooding problems.

This can be resolved by a simple underground pipe line system. A drainage system engineers can build during the dry season. This flooding makes no sense. Its irresponsible and poor governance. This is what happens when government put State over the people.Nigerian government should remove it’s self from Aliigbo land, free the hands of igbo leaders so they can get oitside help from the Unitrd States or from Germany. These two countries with igbo engineers can build the right water drain structure.

      Please expatiate(explain further).
How does the the Federal Government in Abuja control infra-structure projects in a State. The state has all the powers to oversee its Public Health, Environmental and utility projects which are budgeted. If not budgeted, private consortium(business and private) should. The problem, as I see it, are one of prioritization and lack of funds(poverty). Our people do not value infra-structure that are not “showy”, “shiny”. Hence, politicians build to show off. However, these underground structures and their maintenance are what every other developments depend on.
