Information reaching 247ureports.com indicates that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC] may be approaching nearer to the eventual arrest of the former governor of Anambra State in the person of Chief Peter Obi. This is as the EFCC had written the Anambra Ministry of Works a querying letter concerning elements of the petition against Chief Peter Obi – to help streamline their investigation.

According to the information, the EFCC having received a petition against the fraudulent activities of the former governor while he held sway of the activities at the realm of the State, took to action and launched a comprehensive investigation into the contents of the petition. See the contents of the original petition here – N259billion Fraud: EFCC To Invite Former Gov. Peter Obi.

The petition had charged that the former governor committed contract fraud and contract padding to enable him siphon monies away from the state treasury. The petition authored by a youth group based in Anambra State was supported with documentary evidence to buttress their claim.

The supporting documents attached to the petition was made available to 247ureports.com. It contains the frantic last minute rush to approve over N3billion in road contracts that were yet to be executed or yet to mobilize to site. The documents were payment receipts and payment approvals by the former Governor himself. Between the last week of January 2014 and the first week of February 2014, the document showed an amount in excess of N3billion was approved for payment. Some of the companies paid in the frantic rush to payment include:

  • Akumast Nigeria Limited – the sum of N360,000,000 was approved even though the sum requested for was only N180,000,000 for the reconstruction of Aguluzigbo roads. The payment was approved by Peter Obi in January 2014.
  • Nigercat Construction Nigeria Limited – the sum of N444,960,916.41 was approved for the rehabilitation of River Niger Bridge Head Road and slip roads at Upper Iweka interchange. The payment approval was given on January 29, 2014 by Peter Obi.
  • IDC – the sum of N380,000,000 was approved even though N580,000,000 was requested for the rehabilitation of roads connecting Onitsha, Obosi and Nkpor. Approval was given on January 21, 2014.
  • Nigercat Construction Nigeria Limited – the sum of N999,541,758.54 was paid out at the eve of Peter Obi’s departure from office. [see enclosed document]
  • Stefanutti Stocks Hapel Nigeria Limited – the sum of N457, 640,678.19 was paid out at the eve of Peter Obi’s departure from office. [see enclosed document]

Interestingly, the rushed approvals came with less than a month to his handover ceremony to the new governor, Chief Willie Obiano. Our source explains that documentary evidence with EFCC shows conclusively that over N200billion was paid out in a frantic mood during the period leading up to the handover to the new administration. On the ground inspection shows the contrary. Many of the projects were never started.

It is to this effect that the EFCC investigators wrote to the Ministry of Works for more answers.

Stay tuned.
