Reports reaching us from parts of Anambra state speak of different
levels of effect an the update of voter registers, organised by the
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which commenced today
in the state

While the exercise was smooth in some places, others recorded serious
teething problems. This has so far affected local government areas
like Onitsha North, Onitsha South Ogbaru and Idemili North

Details before us indicate that pages of INEC papers were torn off by
unknown persons in Ogidi. This was easy because these booths were
unmanned by INEC UP till 12 Noon in some cases, leading people to act
without direction.

INEC machines and computers sent to Nkpor and Obosi were
dysfunctional, leading to prospective voters coming to the centres and
returning home without accomplishing their mission. Reports reaching
us indicate that only one machine apiece was provided to cover each of
those densely populated areas of the state.

.In an isolated case in Agulu Anaocha area, a female voter who had
lost her voters card, haven identified her name on the pasted pages of
the voter register brought out a razor blade and tried to cut out her
picture and data from the pasted pages in order to laminate it in
place of her lost card.

She was promptly intercepted by one of APC leaders, and advised the
lady to write a letter of complaint to INEC on the matter, which she
did, but there was no INEC Official to hand over the letter to.

Elsewhere in Awka many were oblivious of any registration drawing
attention to low level of awareness on the exercise.

We urge INEC to step up its level of public information on the voter
exercise in the state and also tighten their field supervision to
ensure that those who should benefit form the exercise are not denied
these rights.

We caution that the security presence in this exercise on the first
day does not reflect the importance of the exercise and call on the
Commissioner of Police to step up the presence of their men in the
exercise.

We advise that our elites and leaders should educate those who are
misguided in tearing off INEC pasted registers to recognise that INEC
is not an opposition party, but an umpire which deserves the
cooperation of all to succeed.

We trust that the days ahead would witness an improvement in the leaking areas.
Once again APC urges the good people of Anambra State to make this
voter review exercise a top priority remembering that it was the basis
for the massive rigging of the 2010 governorship elections by APGA in
a year that Michael Jackson, Beko Ransome Kuti, Wole Soyinka, Adewale
Ayuba, Gani Fawehinmi and other ghost voters voted to enthrone the
incumbent governor.

APC wishes our prospective voters well as they take the first critical
step towards enthroning an administration that will improve the lot of
the long-suffering people of Anambra State, even as we look forward to
this government being formed by the APC.
