The Jigawa State Hisbah Commission says it reconciled no fewer than 9,321 couples by settling disputes among them in 2018.
The state’s Hisbah Commandant, Malam Ibrahim Dahiru, disclosed this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse on Wednesday.
Dahiru said reconciling couples to ensure peaceful marriages is one of the statutory responsibilities of the agency.
He said the commission also settled 3,299 farmers/herders disputes within the period.
“We settled 703 family disputes, 411 business partnership disputes and 103 disputes between neighbours,” he said.
The commander said the commission has trained personnel with good skills and deep understanding in processes of mediation between disputing parties.
According to him, with the commission in place, people don’t need to go to court.
“Reconciliation is better, as it saves time and helps in decongesting courts.
“No one is compelled to accept any judgment, as reconciliation is done only when the two parties agreed.
“Therefore, people should always visit our offices in all the 27 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state, depending on where they reside, in order to save time, money and settle their differences out of court,” he said.
Dahiru stated that the commission also carried out 1,362 raids across the state within the period under review.
He said 194 of the raids were carried out in bars, 79 in ghetto areas, 94 in gambling joints, 203 in musical joints, 616 in dancing joints and 176 in suspected promiscuity joints.
“Also, 1,250 criminal cases were recorded including 27 rape cases, 19 homosexual, 99 fornication, 41 of child abandonment/child abortion, 1,007 beer consumption and 57 theft cases.
“In the area of humanitarian service, we assisted 1,114 orphans, 1,271 displaced persons, 283 sick persons, 2,014 travelers, 133 new Muslim converts and 3,281 persons in terrible conditions,” he said.
According to him, the commission also repatriated 117 beggars, 202 mentally affected persons, 312 forced marriage victims and 204 trafficked children to their respective villages and towns.
“Within the period under review, we conducted 759 preaching and received 14 new Muslim converts,” he added.
The commandant pointed out that the commission referred no fewer than 1,231 cases to the police.
“The commission referred no fewer than 1,231 cases to the police, prosecuted 1,037 cases and resolved 22,599 cases out of court,” he said.
