Our Goal is No Idle Hands In Anambra – Obiano

The Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano has sai that one of the goals of his over four-year old administration is to ensure there are no idle hands in the state. Governor Obiano who was represented by his wife, Dr. Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano (Osodieme) gave the assurance at the Graduation and Empowerment ceremony of 86 Skills Acquisition Trainees held on 31st January 2019 at Prof. Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre, Awka.  

A breakdown of the eighty-six graduands who had undergone intensive training at the centre in different small and medium scale ventures include; Tailoring & Fashion Design 35 persons; Hair Dressing and Cosmetology 19; Food, Nutrition/Catering 17; Arts & Craft 7; and Computer Appreciation 6 persons.

The governor noted that “an idle mind the devil’s workshop,” explained that the all year round training of women and youths on different skills at the Women Development Centre and other training centres across the state is one of his government initiatives aimed at getting them engaged; helping to reduce poverty and dependence amongst the populace.

Said Obiano, “”We know that unemployment is pervasive in the country that is why we train our youths and women to acquire new skills and afterwards empower them with equipment and start-up money to practice the ventures that will help them take care of their needs and hopefully support their family.”

Obiano stated that Anambra state appreciates the relevance of practical knowledge and has integrated that in her social intervention scheme, and encourages entrepreneurial independence among youths of the state who show passion for self-development and growth.

He noted the supportive role of the wife’s NGO, Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFÉ) in the area of training and empowerment of women and youths who are now over 4,350 beneficiaries and assured of its sustenance.

Welcoming the Governor, Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue, said that the event was historic because the state government is building an unmatchable legacy in the number of persons that it has lifted out poverty. She cited Osodieme’s immense compassion for the indigent and support for the less privileged as a good example of collaboration needed to solve challenges of poverty and unemployment.  

On his part, the Commissioner for Youth Empowerment and Creative Economy, Mr. Bonaventure Enemali, commended the traing and empowerment of the graduands, stressing that the economic value of the skill acquisition programme remains huge to Anambra State, and called for its sustenance.

The Principal of the Skills Training and Acquisition Centre, Lady Amaoyibo Ogunwa, said that Obiano has injected life and belief into the centre which began since year 2016 but was deprived basic attention by previous administrations. She urged the graduands to reciprocate the government’s gesture with commitment and make diligent use of the resources.

Expressing appreciation, three of the graduands: Chinenye Joseph, who got a brand new sewing machine and cash for her tailoring business; Ngozi Uyanwune, who was presented with a gas -oven cooker for her food and nutrition enterprise; and Maryann Ozoemena, who received a hair dryer for her hair dressing business, thanked Governor’s Obiano for giving them opportunity to excel and succeed, and pledged to make fruitful use of the kits and money.

Highlights of the ceremony were the modelling of various clothing and dresses sown by the trainees including wedding gowns. Also on display were handmade crafts and various confectionery products by the graduands, an evidence of how far they had come in the over eight months of practical learning in the school.
