Tension In Abia Polytechnic Over Sack Of 500 Workers

There is tension in the Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, over sack of 500 staff of the institution for allegedly using fake certificates and falsifying their ages to gain employment.

It was gathered that the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ikechi Mgbeoji, had last year, set up a committee to verify credential of workers of the institution, but it could not be confirmed whether the committee has submitted its report.

Though the list is yet to be made public but the affected workers have been deleted from the payroll of the Institution.

A cross section of staff of the institution who declined to have their names on print said they resumed work after the Christmas and new year holidays and were confronted with reports that the management of the institution has concluded plans to sack 500 workers over fake certificates and falsification of age. The workers lamented that they are being owed 9 months of arrears of salaries and urged the management of the Polytechnic to make efforts to pay off the salaries.

Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, Abia Poly chapter, Engr. Uma God’swill, said  that no staff of the institution has been served sack letter nor has any list been pasted.

“Though no staff of the institution has received a sack letter nor has any list of sack of workers been pasted, but we cannot dismiss such report, fold our hands and watch our members be victimized. You can see that there is tension in the Polytechnic; people are afraid of their jobs, this is not good. We are talking of being owed 9 months arrears of salaries. We will meet with management to find out the criteria for the sack. What ASUP is saying is that you can’t just sack workers like that. There must be reason. If the management is sacking any worker, an acceptable reason must be attached to it. ASUP cannot defend any staff with fake certificate or false age declaration, but we will not allow any genuine worker to be sacked.

He said his Union had contacted the management of the Institution over the list but has not gotten any reply.  Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics, SSANIP, Comrade Nwachukwu chuks, said he has no comment.

Efforts to get the reaction of the Rector of the Polytechnic, Prof. Ezionye Eboh, were unsuccessful. However, a management staff of the institution who pleaded anonymity insisted that no staff of the Polytechnic has been sacked. “Why can’t those spreading the rumour show you any sack letter or list of the sacked workers? If there is a list of sacked workers, will it be a secret document? Won’t it be pasted on the notice board and the affected staff notified? “

Abia State government in a press statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Mr. John Okiyi Kalu, said, no staff of the institution has received disengagement notice, but however ,added, “We are aware that the management of the institution have been investigating sundry issues bothering on presentation of forged or fake certificates, falsification of age, over staffing of some units, presentation of first leaving certificates that indicate that the holder already had the certificate at age 4-8, which is naturally impossible, as well as the employment of unqualified teaching and non teaching staff.

“Abia state government supports any fair, legal and equitable measure taken by the management of the institution to sanitize the institution and re-position it to be able to deliver better quality graduates, pay workers as at when due and wean itself of operational dependence on government financial support for survival.”
