The House of Representatives has slammed the Controller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service NIS, Muhammed Babandede for awarding contracts to non-performing expatriate companies even for jobs which ordinarily could have been executed by local companies with ease.

The lawmakers through its Committee on Interior stated their position during an oversight visit to the headquarters of the service, Thursday in Abuja.

“They (expatriate firms) are vampires; these deals must come to an end.  We will come out with a strong recommendation that is going to take care of that.  This cancer must be removed from our society”, Adams Jagaba, chairman of the committee threatened.

Jagaba frowned at a situation whereby duly trained immigration officers are not allowed to prove their mettle as their briefs had been outsourced to “expatriates”.

He said; “There are some of these service providers that we don’t even need them at all. Most officers that are supposed to man these machines, are not doing that.  You can’t bring expatriates to be carrying away our money in the name of outsourcing.”

The committee vowed to end the practice of outsourcing jobs in the paramilitary services, saying one of the foreign companies, Contec, has not lived up to expectation.

In his defence, Babandede exonerated himself of any wrong, saying it was the Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau that approved the contracts.

“These agreements were signed between the Minister and the various firms”, he said.

Babandede was however quick to add that the minister had constituted a panel to review the contracts in dispute.

The CG also added generated over N13 billion from the issuance of passports in 2016, adding that most of the NIS’ products were locally sourced.

“Even our arms, we bought from the Defence Industry Corporation of Nigeria DICON”.
