Kidnappers Kill Victim In Imo, Collect N.5m Ransom

*Police exhume hostage’s remains

Police in Imo State have arrested a four-man kidnap gang that killed their victim and still collected N510,000 from the family after promising to release her.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Taiwo Lakanu, who disclosed this at the police headquarters in Owerri Tuesday, said the gang abducted their victim, identified as Madam Ogo Omereji, about three weeks ago, killed her and buried her remains in a shallow grave in Igwebuike forest, Awara Community in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State.

He said after killing their victim, the kidnappers continued to pester the family for ransom, adding that the family had to invite the police to step into the matter after they had paid N510,000.00 as ransom and the hostage was still not released.

The commissioner said the kidnappers led the police to where they buried the hostage, adding that the corpse had been exhumed and released to her family for proper burial rites after an autopsy was carried out.

The suspects—Gift Emeka, Sunday Uchenna, Emeka Chinedu and Peter Obido— who also hail from Awara community all confessed to newsmen of kidnapping Madam Omereje, torturing her to death and burying her remains in a shallow grave in the Igwebuike forest.

They equally confessed to have collected a ransom of N510,000.00 from her family.

Speaking separately to newsmen, the suspects, Emeka Gift, Chinedu Emeka and Sunday  Uchenna who confessed to have taken part in the crime, but said the woman died in error.

They stated that they took part in the crime to make ends meet.

The CP equally paraded other suspects, numbering 25, with 5 AK47 rifles, 9 pump action rifles, three English made pistles, 5 locally made guns, two axes, one handcaft and ammunitions.

He stated that their case would be determined at the court where they would soon be charged to, adding that the Command had resolved to launch a strategic battle against kidnapping in the state. He therefore warned others still indulged in the criminal act to desist or have same fate befall them.
