*It is not True – Army

Piqued by an alleged threat of invasion of their community by soldiers, the people of Abala in Obingwa council area of Abia state have petitioned Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu, seeking his intervention to save them over the looming threat.

But the Army has dismissed the allegation, insisting there are no plans to invade Abala or any community in the state by soldiers.

In the petition written by C. C Emelogu &Associates on behalf of the community, the people alleged that soldiers led by Major Bello from Orie –Agalaba-Ohanze military Unit in ObingwaLocal Government Area and 2nd Lt A. Isahu from Akirika -Obu military Unit in Ukwa East Local Government Area had visited the community and warned their traditional ruler that if the rifles snatched from some soldiers along Port-Harcourt road during the MASSOB/IPOB protest in Aba, were not returned, that blood will flow like water.

According to the petition copied to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, zone 9, and heads of security agencies in the state; “We write to draw your attention to the serious threat of invasion of Abala Autonomous community in Obingwa local Government Area of Abia state by the military if according to the Army personnel who visited the village a day after the MASSOB/IPOB demonstration and led by Major Bello from Orie –Agalaba-Ohanze Army Unit and 2nd Lt A. Isahu from Akirika -Obu Army Unit in Ukwa East LGA told the traditional ruler of the community that if the rifles  snatched from some soldiers along Port-Harcourt road in Aba were not returned that blood will flow like water.

“These officers and their men came to Abala Market Square where they arrested some Abala youths and after beating them marched them to the palace of the traditional ruler of Abala Autonomous community, Elder Paul Ekwenye, and informed him that information at their disposal was that the said rifles can be found in the community and handed ultimatum that the said rifles must be brought out”.

The petition maintained that the community knew nothing about missing rifles belonging to the Army.

However, a senior military officer from the 144 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, Asa, Ukwa West Local Government Area, who declined to have his name on print,, dismissed the allegation as false.

“We don’t work like mad people, the lawyer who wrote the petition should have gone to the traditional ruler who would have given him first hand information of what transpired during our visit to the community.”

He admitted that soldiers went to Abala community and had discussions with the traditional ruler over some security issues, but denied reports of threat of invasion by soldiers.
