The Federal Government is to dispatch 41 delegates to represent the
country at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change scheduled
to hold in Paris next week.
It would commence from 30th November, 2015 to 11th December, 2015.
Minister of Environment, Amina Mohammed said the conference would
provide a fresh opportunity for the nation to present environmental
issues peculiar to Nigeria and discuss possible ways of addressing
them.
The annual international conference otherwise known as Conference of
Parties (COP) is to review UN Convention implementation programmes
towards reducing climate change impacts.
The first convention took place in Berlin in 1995. 20 years after, the
UN discussion will target achieving a legally binding and universal
agreement on climate, with the aim of keeping the global warming below
2degree Centigrade.
Mohammed spoke during a briefing Tuesday in Abuja, stressing that
Nigeria cannot be represented at any international forums without a
tangible result to show for it.
She said whatever resolution produced from the conference would be
implemented within two years.
“We need to start thinking of how we adopt renewable energies rather
than continued use of fossil fuels. It is important to safeguard our
environment and make it sustainable.”
The Minister canvassed to massive media support on issues relating to
climate change and public enlightenments.
The conference is expected to attract close to 50,000 participants
including 25,000 official delegates from government, intergovernmental
organisations, UN agencies, NGOs and civil society.
