Governor Adams Eric Oshiomhole signs the Edo State 2015 Appropriation Bill into Law watched by the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Hon Lawrence Aghedo (2nd right) and Rt Hon Uyi Igbe, Speaker, Edo State House of Assembly (right).

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State says his administration is aiming to finish stronger in the next thirteen months than it started about seven years ago, and has therefore brought on board fresh competent hands to drive the government’s dream in this regard.

Speaking Friday at the swearing-in of two new Commissioners in the State Executive Council, the Governor also urged people of the State and Nigerians to give their undivided support to President Muhammadu Buhari to enable him drive the desired change the country needs.

According to the Governor while swearing-in Chief Tom Uloko and Gideon Obakhan as Commissioners, “Nigerians wanted change and that is why they voted for a man who has the capacity to provide leadership for that change as represented by President Muhammadu Buhari and we all can see that couple of things are already changing.

“I want to assure our people that we appreciate that we are in hard times, finances are dwindling, a lot of money was stolen from our treasury by previous governments but we are not lamenting. The world appreciates and respects the integrity of the Nigerian President and that is why they all have been giving a helping hand to ensure that what was stolen is returned to the treasury and those involved are brought to justice. So let me use this opportunity to ask you to give your total and unqualified support to our President so he can drive the change that Nigeria desires.”

On the new commissioners, Oshiomhole said: “they are coming on board at a time of dwindling resources, very little revenue available and yet, the expectation of our people is understandably increasing by the day and it is our task to try and perform the magic.

“Chief Tom Uloko is not a stranger to Edo Public Service, he has been around for quite some time and he has served this state diligently in various capacities.

“I believe with Tom Uloko joining the State Executive Council, we are bringing on board a very seasoned Public Officer who will add value to the governance of this state to the benefit of our people.

“Gideon Obhakhan is also somebody who has served our state. I felt therefore that knowing Gideon as I do, knowing his concern for the state, his passion for development, his managerial competence, a very promising young executive, I believe that he brings on board, not just the energy of a young man, but also the insight and the creativity of people of his generation.

“I am very confident that with Gideon on board, the Executive Council is going to be richer and our capacity to deliver to Edo people and our commitment to taking Edo to the next level will be made easier by his additional contribution to the process. So I think I am very fortunate to have two of them accepting to serve.

“People would wonder, ‘why appointing people when you have about 13 months to go’? I think it is good to start strong and start well, but it is even better to finish even stronger. Every coach that desires to win a match must know when to withdraw some players and field new players and I think that is what we have tried to do and I am convinced that it is in the best interest of Edo State.

“Let me use this opportunity to ask our people to simply ask themselves what is the secret of our success. We haven’t fixed all the problem, we didn’t promise we are going to fix all of them, but what we have clearly done is to show that Edo is a viable entity and that we are capable of walking strong and tall where others are limping and even falling.

“So we need brains to drive development, we need brains to manage our meagre resources, we need loyal and honest people to make up for our deficiency, we need men and women who are not only committed but have what it takes to drive the governance of the state and I believe that with the addition of the two gentlemen, we are even going to have a much more stronger team so that we can even score more goals in the last quarter of the match than we did in the first three quarters”, he said.

In his response, Chief Tom Uloko speaking on behalf of the new Commissioners thanked the Comrade Governor for the confidence reposed in them and opportunity given them to serve in the State Executive Council as Commissioners and assured him of their loyalty and commitment in moving the state to higher heights.

Chief Uloko said, “We are most grateful to the Comrade Governor for finding us fit and proper persons to be appointed as Commissioners, to serve the State in this capacity. I wish to further state and re-emphasis that we shall remain faithful and loyal to you and the good people of Edo State in the discharge of our duties, responsibilities and in whatever portfolio we shall be assigned”.

Chief Tom Uloko is to preside over the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affair while Gideon Obakhan is to serve as Commissioner in the Ministry of Education.
