Lecturers of the Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, have locked the institution over the nonpayment of 5 months arrears of salaries and 14 months check off dues owed them.

Sources told 247ureports.com that the lecturers insisted the 2014/15 2nd semester examination of the Polytechnic, which was scheduled for Monday, 14t September, 2015,  did not hold and may have been postponed indefinitely as they continues to press home their demand for the payment of their 5 months arrears of salary.

According to a member of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic, ASUP, at the institution, who preferred anonymity, there will be no exam in this Polytechnic until the management offsets the arrears of salaries and check off dues owed lecturers. We are not joking, it is either they pay or no academic activity will take place here.

247ureports.com gathered that the management has held several close door meetings with the union to ensure that the examinations commence while they look for funds to settle the salary arrears, but the Union insisted on getting their salaries as they had in a memo, penultimate week, notified the management that they were going to ensure that the second semester examination of the institution will hold as planned, if the backlog of five months’ salary arrears owed them, were not settled.

But the Acting rector of the institution, Prof. Uche Eleazar Ikonne said they are doing everything possible to ensure that the lecturers get their salaries as soon as the state government who has acquired the N2billion loan the institution owed a financial institution gets the federal government’s bailout fund.

“The lecturers are being owed five months salary arrears.  We just received the letter on Wednesday and the management is still discussing with them. There is no industrial dispute yet. It is just a notice that they gave to us. Management is discussing from the point that the present government has been responding within the short period it has come on board.

They have responded very positively to the welfare of the staff here that made the salary indebtedness to come down to five months.

“Apart from that, there was N2billion loan facility hanging over the head of this institution which was gotten from First Bank and the effect of that loan is having a very excruciating effect on the life of this school. The government on its own magnanimously absolved that loan just recently; not even up to one week, in addition to the releases they have given to us that made us do salary exercises which has reduced the indebtedness to five months. So, the staff is right in what they are asking for but management is also negotiating with them while at the same time asking for more favours from the state government to see how far we can go paying the remaining salaries.

“So, based on that, I am asking them to trust the management, trust the government of the state that their arrears will be cleared whenever the bailout comes. But let us not stop the process while waiting for the bailout. That’s my appeal to them”, Ikonne said.
