The office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Obingwa council area of Abia State has been set on fire by unknown hoodlums.

Sources told 247ureports.com that the inferno completely razed down the INEC section of the building which also houses other offices in the council.

A cross section of people at the scene who spoke to our correspondent aid they don’t know the cause of the fire and how it started.

Though it could not be confirmed if sensitive materials were consumed in the incident, eyewitnesses told our correspondent that the fire could have spread to other building but for the efforts of vigilant residents, council workers and NYSC members who rallied to put it off.

When our correspondent visited the local government headquarters at Mgboko, a crowd of people were gathered discussing the situation while a combined team of security agents kept watch.

Head of Voter Education and Publicity, Abia state office of INEC, Edwin Enabor, said he was not aware of the incident. However, the Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, Mr. Ezekiel Onyeke confirmed the incident, but added that he was yet to be fully briefed on the extent of damage.
