A member of the Senate or of the House of Representatives shall vacate his seat in the House of which he is a member if—being a person whose election to the House was sponsored by a political party, he becomes a member of another political party before the expiration of the period for which that House was; provided that his membership of the latter political party is not as result of a division in the political party of which he was previously a member or of a merger of two or more political parties or factions by one of which he was previously sponsored”.

Section 68(1) (g) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

After a deep reflection on the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic Nigerian as stated above, I came to a faultless and well-thought-out conclusion that Hon. Aminu Tambuwal committed political suicide on the floor of Green Chambers the fateful day he rocked his boat by defecting to the All Progressive Congress (APC), without putting into consideration the consequences of his myopic actions, because a wise man sees the consequences of his actions before acting. It is obvious that Hon. Tambuwal was selfishly driven by the ignoble words of America writer, who said, “Politics is strife of interests masquerading as a contest of principles, the conduct of public affairs for private advantage”. It dawned on the doubting Thomases, who hitherto had mistaken Hon. Tambuwal for a statesman when he shut his self in the foot by stirring the hornet’s nest, when he said, “My dear colleagues, pursuant to the provisions of the constitution of the Federal Republic and having regards to development in my home state of Sokoto, I wish to hereby formally notify you of my membership of the All Progressive Congress (APC)”.

The burning questions on the lips of Nigerians are: what was Hon. Tambuwal thinking when he said, “…pursuant to the provisions of the constitution of the Federal Republic…” which sections of the constitution was he referring to, that contradicts Section 68 (1) (g) as stated above? Was he making reference to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Sokoto State or Nigeria? As a Constitutional Lawyer, did he deliberately or ignorantly skip Section 68 (1) (g) as mentioned earlier to have his cake and eat it? Does Nigerian Constitution have provision for, “having regards to development in my home state of Sokoto—the development could be the renovation of his grandfather hut or marriage ceremony of his unborn daughter?

Hon. Tambuwal was swimming in self delusion, when he displayed his anti-party tendencies by saying, “I wish to hereby formally notify you…”, what is the conceptuality meaning of “formally”, which implied that he had been an unregistered member of the APC long ago, but has now decided to “formally” notify the House of his anti-party activities and opportunistic characters! Nigerians detest running with a hare and hunting with a hounds like Hon. Tambuwal, who has been taking Nigerians for a ride for so long now.

As Nigerians eagerly awaits the resumption of House of Representation on 3rd December, 2014. Constitutionally speaking, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal has no constitutional backing to remain a member of Nigerian’s House of Reps; let alone preside over lower House as a Speaker! Having lost the mandate of the party that sponsored him to House by defecting to the APC, he has trampled upon the moral thrust which hitherto sustained him in the office as a member of the Green Chamber, because trust is a burden! Hon. Tambuwal would be embarking on a wild goose chase and living in a fantasy world, if he continue parading himself as a member of the House of Reps; let alone Speaker of the House when putting into consideration Section 68 (1) (g) vis-à-vis the Supreme Court judgment on Governor Amechi Vs PDP, which confers political party the sole power to sponsored a candidate.

In Hon. Tambuwal’s inaugural speech as Speaker, tagged: “Time to Remake Nigeria”, which he read on the floor of the House after his election as Speaker, he said, “Nigeria is greater than the sum of our individual ambitions and greater than all our differences…we must stop protecting and projecting narrow interests at the expense of our national interests”. Is it not the same opportunist who is about sinking the ship of our country, by creating anarchy in the system because of his parochial interest and narrow-minded ambition that made the above ill-conceived and hypocritical inaugural speech, just to deceive gullible Nigerians? Is he not projecting his myopic interest above national interest by fighting to retain his seat as the Speaker, while he has already lost both the Constitutional and moral backgrounds to do so? Hon. Tambuwal’s hallmark of hypocrisies came to crescendo of hypocrisy while making his inaugural speech when he said, “We must work to strengthen our practice of Rule of Law. As Representatives of the people (the keepers of our constitution)…Guided by the fundamental principles of our constitution, we must stand firm on the values that built our national”. If I may asked, is Section 68 (1) (g) not among the Constitution Tambuwal sworn to   protect as the so-called “keepers of our constitution”? Unless this particular section is expunge from the Constitution before 3rd December, 2014, (which is not possible), Hon. Aminu Tambuwal’s membership of the lower has elapsed, if found within the Green Chamber on that day can be arrested and prosecuted as an intruder!

Apart from Hon. Aminu Tambuwal’s nomadic tendency and political prostitution, which span over a decade, that saw him decamped from APP—ANPP—DPP—PDP—APC within few years, it is also on record that Hon. Tambuwal is running the lower House like buccaneers, where he succeeded in displaying his political rascality and legislative recklessness in hurting government officials to undermine this administration. As Hon. Tambuwal has decided to embark on this ill-conceived political suicidal mission, Nigerians would not fold their hands and watch this Boko haram sympathizer destroy the legislative arm of government.
