Information available to 247ureports.com obtained from sources within the Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC] indicate that a growing tension between a significant number of the national commissioners and the national chairman of INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega appear to be reaching a breaking point – should the national chairman continue to prepare for the 2015 electoral exercise using the previously published polling units. The commissioners, according to the available information, had extended their concerns over the published polling units to the national chairman in several closed door meetings.

The concerns raised primarily by commissioners from the south south, south east, south west political regions – pointed to the glaring discrimination in the manner the polling units were skewed to favor the northern part of the country. One of the more vocal commissioners from the south west geopolitical regions told 247ureports.com that the federal capital territory [FCT] alone was allocated more polling units than the entire south east geopolitical region. The commissioner called the spread of the polling units “a northern agenda“. The south west commissioner who spoke in angry tone called the INEC Chairman “a disappointment and closet bigot” – while explaining that the commissioners had tried numerous times to impress upon the chairman that the spread of the polling units had intrinsic faults. “The Chairman remained adamant and determined to deliver the election to the north. He even told us at one of our meetings that only the courts can stop him now – that he is moving on with the polling units. The man has gone nuts“.

The commissioner went on to reveal that the commissioners had reasoned with the chairman to call for a vote within the team of commissioners on whether to proceed with the spread of the polling units or seek for an alternative spread. Reluctantly, the chairman called for the vote, and the vote was tied – even though six commissioners were absent.  The six commissioners who were absent were said to have not been aware of the scheduled vote. The six were against the polling units as is. They would have voted against it, said the source.

The commissioners are said to have their hands tied. Their options appear limited. They are barred to challenge the national chairman through the courts. But our source notes however that the commissioners appear determined. “We will not give up. This will amount to bold face rigging, if nothing is done”.
