Imo Government Declares ‘Operation Stop Criminals Before They Strike’

The Imo State government has vowed to stamp out kidnapping, armed robbery and other violent crimes by making the State uninhabitable for criminals.

Governor Rochas Okorocha disclosed this during an expanded Security Council meeting held at the Imo International Conference Center, Owerri.

The meeting which was attended by the traditional rulers of the 637 autonomous communities, members of the community Watch, the Imo security Network, the Army, Police Drug Law Enforcement Agency and other Para-military agencies operating in the State.

Owelle Okorocha who commended traditional rulers in the state and security operatives for their collaborative effort that helped put kidnapping to a halt in the past three years.

He however noted that as the Christmas and electioneering period draw near, pro-active measures must be taken to checkmate resurgence of criminal activities in the state, and charged the stakeholders to redouble their efforts by stopping criminals before they strike.

The Governor said the meeting was to re-assess the security situation in the state following a recent report that kidnappers and armed robbers have planned to relocate to Imo from neighboring States. He therefore warned criminals to stay clear from the state as government will deal decisively with kidnappers, armed robbers, child traffickers, Indian hemp smokers and other criminals.

He appealed to youths in the state to refrain from cultism and being used as election thugs while he called on hoteliers to beware of people they lodge in as well as report suspicious activities to the police.

Governor Okorocha further enjoined those in possession of illegal firearms to submit them the police assuring them of amnesty.

Contributing, the Deputy Commissioner of Police on Administration, Mr. Austin Agbonlahor, assured residents in the State of the disposition of the police to work with them and urged all to feel free to give useful information that will help in curbing crime in the state.
