No fewer than 40 people
are feared dead in a
communal clash that
erupted at the weekend
between the Eggon and
Gwadara ethnic groups of
Nasarawa State.

The trouble
started between the two
ethnic groups on Friday
over a piece of land in
Igha, a village in
Nasarawa Eggon Local
Government Area,
culminating into a deadly
clash in the night of the
same day.

This was happening as
over 100 homes, including
shops, two schools, and a
police station were
wrecked by rain storm in
Dorowa village of Barkin
Ladi local government
area of neighbouring
Plateau State, leaving the
community ravaged and
hundreds of residents
rendered homeless.

The youths from the affected
communities were
mobilised to fight before
the night of Friday, but
were deterred by the
military, which got wind
of their intentions.

The situation, however,
turned sour at night,
resulting in the clash that
led to the death of over 40
people.

A security source, who
pleaded anonymity,
informed that but for the
efforts they were able put
together, the number of
casualties would have
risen beyond the figure
above.

Confirming the incident the state capital, the
state’s police command’s
spokesperson an Assistant
Superintendent of Police
(ASP), Umar Ismaila,
however, disputed the
number of the dead being
quoted, saying only five
people lost their lives in
the skirmishes.

He, however, confirmed
that it was a “communal
clash between Eggon and
Gwandara, who clashed
over a piece of land”, but
was quick to say that the
police had already
mobilised to the scene of
the crisis and on top to the
situation.

An eye witness, who is a
native of , who simply
identified himself as
Akawachiki, now taking
refuge in Lafia, disclosed
that the situation was
unbearable and that he
could no longer risk his
life staying there.

However, former Deputy
Governor in the state,
Professor Onje Gyewado,
stated that Governor
Tanko Al-Makura’s 2015
ambition may be the main
cause of all the crisis in
the state.

According to him, the
state has recorded all
these crises since Al-
Makura announced his
second term bid.
