A Sokoto High Court yesterday heard how former governor of the state and Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) chieftain, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, allegedly gave out money to some highly placed persons in the state.

Bafarawa is standing trial over alleged N16billion fraud preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

At the trial of the ex-governor yesterday, a witness, Senator Salihu Bakwei Sabon Birni, told the court that Bafarawa ordered him on two different occasions to give money to individuals in the state.

In his evidence before the court, the witness said in March 2007 that the former governor ordered him to give N29million to Alhaji Salihu Maigwumi, Alhaji Gambo Illela and the permanent secretary, Ministry of Works, Bello Sifawa for the supply of vehicles to the state.

The witness, who was the commissioner for science and technology under Bafarawa administration and also headed the Committee on Education Resuscitation , told the court that in April 2007, Bafarawa ordered him to withdraw from the committee’s account N89million and give N2million to each of the 12 commissioners and a million naira to each of the four special advisers. “After given them the money, I was left with N61 million, ” he added.
