SUSPECTED gunmen allegedly working for a political party in the State,
yesterday unleashed mayhem on some members of the All Progressives
Congress, APC in Azuinyaba in Ezzaegu community in Ishielu council
area of Ebonyi state.
Our correspondent gathered that a group of young men armed with
different weapons including guns invaded the community where they
allegedly attacked a chieftain of APC, Chief Michael Nwanga and other
members of the party in their houses.
It was learnt that the hoodlums allegedly attempted to burn one of
them (APC member) alive while they set some of their houses on fire
before fleeing the community.
The victim who had his left leg broken during the attack alleged that
the Coordinator of Inyaba North Development Centre, Chief Livinus
Nwamba sent the assassins to eliminate him, adding that he had had an
open confrontation with the council boss (names withheld) over the
presence of APC in the community before the incident.
Narrating his ordeal, Chief Nwanga noted that they (the hoodlums)
stormed his house in the late hours of yesterday, ordered him to
surrender before they descended on him. He said the assailants dragged
him out from his compound to the middle of the road where they
allegedly hung a tyre on him with an intention to burn him alive
before the intervention of a team of policemen from the Assistant
Commissioner of Police, AC in charge of Operation, Police
Headquarters, Abakaliki came to his rescue.
The victim also disclosed that during the attack they broke his leg
and left him in the pool of his own blood when they sighted the
police, adding that when the police rescued him, there was no hospital
that could admit him because of non-payment of hospital initial
deposit for treatment which he said resulted in the policemen dumping
him at the police station in Ishielu council area of the state.
Mr. Nwanga gave the names of some of his suspected attackers as Uche
Ekech, Ikechukwu Okpor, Uhuru and the immediate past Coordinator of
Inyaba North Development Centre, Mr. John Okpor while calling on the
security agencies to intervene and investigate the deadly attack on
his life.
However, when contacted, the Coordinator of Inyaba Development Centre,
Chief Livinus Nwamba denied involvement in the attack, saying “I am
not fighting anybody, am not the type, I am a man of God and can’t
soil my hand. I did not send anybody to kill anybody for me, I am not
fight with anybody”
Contacted, the State Police spokesman, ASP Chris Anyanwu who confirmed
the incident, said that the incident was connected with political
tussle in the area.
