Rector of the Abia State polytechnic, Aba , Elder Allwell Onukaogu has assured that workers of the institution who are owned five months of salary arrears would soon be paid.

Both academic and non-academic staff of the institution were last paid salaries in March 2013 as a result of alleged paucity of funds which has been a challenge to the smooth running of the Aba based institution.

Reacting to the situation, Onukogu said the issue of nonpayment of workers salary in the polytechnic would soon be a thing of the past as the State government has waded into the matter.

He disclosed that two months’ salary would be paid to the workers very soon while the remaining months would be settled as soon as the current staff auditing was completed.

Onukaogu lamented that nonpayment of salaries which he said was alien to the institution, was as a result of rapid and vast expansion that had taken place over the years in the polytechnic which according to him took the authorities unawares.

“Arrangements have been concluded to pay two months in the next few days and the state government as I am aware is coming with something positive in this direction as soon as the staff audit report is submitted to it.

“The expansion that had taken place in the polytechnic in the past few years were so fast and vast that it took some of us unawares, but I’m sure the state government is equal to the task, very soon, we shall all be singing a new song,” he stated.

A member of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic(ASUP) of the institution who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of victimization said the salary arrears was as a result of poor funding from the state government which he said gives the institution N25m monthly subvention as against N160m monthly wage bill.

He hinted that for some time now, the school had resorted to borrowing money from banks to pay salaries, but added that the banks has refused to extend credit facilities to the institution due to the heavy amount owed them which it said must be liquidated before any new bail out.

A cross section of workers of the Polytechnic who spoke to 247ureports.com called on the federal government to take over the running of the polytechnic for proper funding.
