(TEHRAN, Iran) — Iran is warning the U.S. and others who might join in a military strike against its ally Syria of grave consequences if they try to intervene in the 30-month conflict.

Various Iranian civilian and military officials warned that any action could cause war to erupt all over the Middle East.

Iranian military chief Major General Hassan Firouzabadi promised that Israel would get the worst of a direct U.S. attempt to punish Syria for alleged chemical weapons use, saying “Any military action against Syria will drive the Zionists to the edge of fire.” Iran never refers to Israel by name.

Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Mohammed Ali Jafari also predicted Israel’s “imminent destruction” as a deputy prime minister added that the U.S. would commit a serious strategic mistake if a missile strike is launched against targets in Syria.

While denouncing the use of chemical weapons, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said his country was also conferring with Russia, another Syrian ally, about how to best stop military action by the U.S.

Rouhani claimed that the U.S. was rushing to judgment to blame President Bashar al-Assad’s regime without knowing all the facts.
