Information reaching 247ureports.com indicates that the upper chamber of the National Assembly rejected the proposed bill for Local Government autonomy and the six year single term for governors and the President. The vote came today’s early after afternoon hours at about 12:30pm.
The bill had proposed a single six [6] year tenures for governors and for the President. The would have taken effect beginning 2015 – and would result in President Goodluck Jonathan not contesting in the 2015 presidential elections. The LG autonomy bill would have given the LGAs complete powers to exercise control over the allocations from federal government. The powers over the LGA funds – presently – is rested on the State governors – when an elected LGA chairman is absent. Also, the governors have the control on when to conduct LGA elections. The LG bill proposed to change the control chemistry.
Following the vote on the LG and single tenure bill, the Senate proceeded to commence debate on constitutional review.
