As part of the urban renewal programme, Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has disclosed that the Inter-Bau Roundabout in Asaba would be expanded to four lanes to reduce traffic congestion in the State Capital.
Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan who disclosed this Wednesday during an unscheduled inspection visit to the Inter-Bau Roundabout explained that illegal structures which included a church and a shopping mall around the Roundabout should be demolished within a week to pave way for construction work to begin at the site.
The governor explained that “most of the structures around the Roundabout were illegally erected and I give the occupants one week to remove them since we gave them evacuation notice over two years ago”.
While reiterating government’s desire to construct a flyover at the Roundabout in the long run, Dr. Uduaghan opined that the expansion of the Roundabout to four lanes was meant to tackle the perennial traffic congestion observed and reduce the man-hour loss.
“We cannot wait for the complete construction of the fly over which will help reduce traffic congestion. So we have decided to expand the roads around the Inter-Bau Roundabout to four lanes. This can be achieved as soon as the illegal structures around the Roundabout are removed and we have given the occupants a one week notice to evacuate them,” he said.
Governor Uduaghan while acknowledging the rise in traffic congestion and increase in the population of Asaba, the state capital due to the rise in economic activities and the implementation of the “Delta Beyond Oil” vision in the state, promised to carry out more urban renewal projects especially road construction and expansion in Asaba metropolis.
