Kano state government has concluded plans to evacuate Almajiri from the streets to various states and countries, in its bid to discourage street begging that has constituted serious menace in the state.
“All necessary arrangements are on top gear to ban street begging in the state; and as such, we have commenced the evacuation of Almajiri from the streets in our effort to send them back to their respective states of origin,” said the Hisbah Commander-General, Malam Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa.
Investigations carried out by our Correspondent indicated that over 65 per cent of the Almajiri roaming the streets of Kano are not indigenes of the state.
Speaking to reporters yesterday in Kano, Malam Daurawa confirmed that the government was ready to send an Executive Bill to the State House of Assembly to enact a law that would ban all forms of street begging in the state.
“Arrangements have been concluded by the state government to ban street begging and send away all child street beggars (Almajiris) that are not Kano indigenes to their states of origin,” Daurawa added.
He, however, described as embarrassing, a situation whereby deported street beggars from abroad are taken straight to Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, “ and their assumption is that all black street beggars are from Kano.”
Meanwhile, the Kano State Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB) said the board has evacuated more than 120, 000 tons of refuse monthly within the last three months.
According to the board’s managing director, Alhaji Abdullahi Bichi who spoke to reporters in Kano yesterday, about 4, 000 tones of refuse are being evacuated from Kano streets on daily basis.
He noted that his board intensified efforts on evacuating heaps refuse both from the roads and drainage to avoid flooding during this rainy season.
The REMASAB boss further disclosed that 400 tractors were used to clear the accumulated waste, adding that the Board created 250 collection centres in the city, “an arrangement which has given some sanity; and we are achieving this in collaboration with the residents towards ensuring a healthy environment in Kano.”
Bichi called on the general public to cooperate with the state government in its move to rid the state off dirt and refuse, pointing out that, “it became necessary because government alone can not provide clean, healthy and hygienic environment.”
He also called on members of the public to obey sanitation rules and participate during sanitation exercises which usually hold last Saturdays of every month.
