2013 Flood Disaster is Imminent- Executive Secretary NASEMA

The executive secretary of the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency (NASEMA) Dr.Abdullahi Idris has stated that the report of NIMET on this year’s flood disaster is real. He buttressed that 2013 Flood disaster is imminent, calling on communities in Nasarawa State lying at the bank of River Benue to relocate to a safer place.

Dr. Idris disclosed this in an interview with 247ureports.com in his office recently, adding that the state Government in spite of series of warning on communities at the flood prone zone to relocate to safer place yielded no result, He acknowledged that commoners within the flood prone areas attached traditional believes to their permanent place of abode, saying the state Government is prepared to do all within its reach to protect the lives of its citizenry.

He cited some of the worst flood areas to Guto community among others, He stated that the state Governor is ready to give his utmost support to the people of Guto community by relocating them but to no avail, “the response from not only Guto but other affected communities are negative”, While fielding questions from journalist he averred that Nasarawa was the worst devastated state affected by flood in 2012, He further added that, ”the press did not report the level of the incident in the state”.

He stated that 2000 communities were displaced in 2012.

In another development the executive secretary said no fewer than 2985 people were displaced by communal; violence that rock the state since November last year, He revealed that Agbashi, the headquarter of Ekye is the most devastated inhabitant, other communities listed are Burum-Burum,Bassa,Yelwan Bassa,Yelwa Ediya,Agyaragu,Assakio,Mada Station,Rutu,Sakwato,Kongon Lemo,Iga amongst others.

Speaking on the N400m Federal Government Intervention fund for the victims of flood catastrophe in 2012, Dr. Idris revealed that the N50m was expended by the state Government, He however added that N350m was kept in an account named “Flood Account” stating that the money will be used to provide road network, schools, health centres to communities distraught by flood last years.
