Abuja based Non Governmental Organisation, Society for Rule of Law in Nigeria (SRLN) has described yesterday’s visit to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Mariam Aloma Mukhtar by the governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi as suspicious.

The group said; “knowing the way functionaries of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) operate whenever they require favour from an individual or organisation, we are sure the motive of the visit was more than just to present the new Ekiti State laws.”

Fayemi had visited the CJN in Abuja yesterday shortly after the swearing-in of the new Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN) to present the new laws of Ekiti State.

Reacting to the visit, SRLN said in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Chima Ubeku that it was morally wrong for Fayemi to have visited the CJN under any guise when the case filed by former governor, Chief Segun Oni against the Appeal Court judgment that brought him (Fayemi) to power was still pending before the Supreme Court.

The group, which however expressed confidence in the ability of the CJN and other justices of the Supreme Court to do justice without bias, wondered how many states in the country had presented its laws to the CJN in the past.

“The motive of yesterday’s visit to the CJN by Fayemi must be beyond mere presentation of new laws of Ekiti State as claimed.

“Though we are sure that the CJN and other justices of the Supreme Court are men and women of proven integrity, we wish to alert that the CJN should be mindful of the ways and manners the ACN people find their ways round important people whenever they are in dire need of favour from them.

“Most importantly, the questions that must be answered are; is it the normal practice for States to bring their laws to the CJN as done by Fayemi yesterday? Has any state presented its laws to the CJN before? Of what significant importance was the presentation of Ekiti State laws to the CJN when indeed, Fayemi and his other ACN governors are the ones championing true federalism?

“Therefore, from all indications, there could be more to the visit than meet the eyes and we wish to beg the CJN to be mindful of these schemers in the ACN so that they don’t soil her hard-earned reputation,” SRLN said.
