Lesotho Prime Minister Tom Motsoahae Thabane yesterday said his country was praying for President Robert Mugabe to take a leading role in Sadc if he finishes with the country’s politics.
Thabane, who officially opened the 102nd Harare Agricultural Show yesterday, showered President Mugabe with praises, describing the 88-year-old veteran leader as “courageous”.
“We pray to God that if President Mugabe finishes with his politics, he can devote his time to Sadc,” said Thabane.
“When we were in confusion, President Mugabe and Sadc stood by the people of Lesotho. The recent May elections brought a coalition government for the first time thanks to Mugabe and Sadc. What is left is to make the gains truly irreversible,” he said.
“The people of Zimbabwe chose the right leader at the right time. A courageous leader who stood for his people. Because of political maturity demonstrated by the President and the opposition this country is about to close an unpalatable chapter,” he added.
“The people of Lesotho join you in support of the full implementation of the GPA and reject imposed solutions to the people of Zimbabwe. We have heard of sanctions by the European Union but we continue to call for the lifting of sanctions. I repeat we call for the removal of sanctions by the West.”
Thabane said he viewed the invitation by Mugabe as a command considering the veteran leader was an elder statesman.
“I am here at the command of (President) Mugabe. When an elder statesman of his age and stature invites an equally young, newly elected PM like me, the invitation is a command,” he said.”
